It does mention the switch to the later head style in mid 1988.
It also mentions something interesting - if the car has been sitting for a while (which my car has), or has been subject to low oil pressures, the internal oil passages for the lifters can get air in them, making the lifters noisy.
It gives a simple procedure for bleeding the air out of the passages. So maybe that will cure my problem!
