Problem: 'clanking' noise when accelerating...

This is an '85 Aero...
Driving home with the windows down I could hear this repetitive clanking noise reflecting off nearby surfaces. At first I thought a piece of metal had lodged in one of the tires and was banging against the car as it seemed to match my road speed.
However, it gets louder when I open up the throttle, and dies down when I ease off. This is only when the car is moving, as when I rev the engine at a stand still it is just fine. No popping out of gear or funny tranny noises (assuming this isn't a funny tranny noise!) either.
So what moving part could have broken away? Something in the drivetrain? Something in the steering? It does seem worse when I accelerate when I'm turning. I need this car to be well again asap and am reluctant to drive it in the meantime :-(
Cheers
Jo K
