I have a 1977 Saab Model 99 GL. I replaced my canister at about 270,000 miles. I had done some work on the fuel system and the canister looked old so I replaced it with one out of a 1984 900S that was given to me. I took the original and refilled it with Medical grade carbon and a new core of Closed Cell foam. The top is heat welded in 3 or 4 points (plastic melted) A knife will seperate the top if done carefully. You can use Plastic Model cement in 3 small drops to secure the top after filling it with new carbon and foam sleeve.
But carbon will absorb odors and keep it trapped until a new odor is introduced. Then it releases the old odors as it absorbs the heavier odor. Any one that has worked around a waste disposal site that uses carbon to trap fecal odors can attest to he release of once trapped ecrement odors. To recharge carbon you only need to expose it to freash air for a period of time. Thus why I keep two Saab charcol canisters. For a cheep supply of carbon any online aquarist dealer like THATFISHPLACE or DRSFOSTERANDSMITH web sites will allow you to mail order.
