My recommendatin would be...
1. Find the correct bolt for the engine block..it is located on the side of the engine BELOW the two angle iron engine support brackets, almost above where the drive shaft comes out of the side of the transmission. You will not be above to "see it" but you will be able to feel it. There are actually two bolts mounted on a metal block. One is used to insert an electric engine heater into the engine water jacket for cold weather, the other (lower) is used for engine draining. The metal bolt block is vertical and is two steped with the lower step facing the bottom. The bolt you want is the lower step bolt. I believe both of them are 17 MM. Once the bolt is out (with copper gasket), you may have to poke up into the hole to break through the crud to get the water to flow. You will need to put a pan under the engine, perhaps with a funnel to catch the engine block water. At first I used a long socket with rachet to loose the bolt. Now, once the bolt had been removed, I use a open end wrench once I screw the bolt back in by hand first.
2. I flushed from the thermosat housing...remove the lower radiator hose connection at the radiator and bend the hose down into a bucket..there is coolant in this hose so put a bucket under the area first.....removing the t-stat from the t-stat housing, notice that two water passages are inside...one round one facing down which goes to one of the two firewall hoses via a hose connection at the mid point of the intake manifold. The other opening is on the side of the t-stat housing which faces back into the engine block. YOu want to spray water into that side t-stat housing opening and collect the water out of the block drain plug.
You then want put the temperture control inside of the car on full heat. Then spray the water down into that round hole in the bottom of the t-stat housing....the water will flow through one of the firewall hoses, through the inside heater coil and return back to the water pump suction and out the lower radiator hose. Many people retro fit the lower radiator hose with a tee fitting so they can do this easily.
Since the radiator is disconnected at both ends you can back flush or forward flush it.
