someone wanted an update on how my installation went, so here it is.
What I thought would be a 15 minute job to replace the rear muffler turned out to be a couple hours.
I did have some rust on the pipe connecting to the middle muffler. So I spent some time getting the old clamp to unscrew but got it off. However, the entire pipe was rusted on the middle muffler and I couldn't get it off. I banged on it for 1/2 hour, tried different lubes and anything I could to loosen the pipe, but it hardly budged.
Finally I drove the car to heat up the pipe, hoping it would make it easier to remove when hot. On my drive, I passed "Ed's Muffler" here in Portland, a local small muffler shop. I decided to stop by to see what they would charge just to remove the old muffler.
To my surprise, they said they would charge $20 to remove the old AND install the new muffler I had!
So I had them do it.
Rear Muffler from eEuroparts $45
Removal/Replacement: $25
Total Price: $70
Meineke wanted to charge over $200 for a new muffler and installation. Also, they tried to screw me over again when I said I already had a new muffler, charging over $60 for removal/installation.
So my advice if you plan on installing a rear muffler is to order from our sponsors, do it yourself if no rust, or find a local small muffler shop to do it for around $20.
Btw, Ed's Muffler ended up charging me $25 instead of $20 because they wanted to weld the rear muffler on. They only charge $20 if only clamped on. The guy showed me that if you only use a clamp, there is still a little exhaust that leaks out where it is clamped on (He even used a torque wrench to tighten the clamp to prove his point). He also said when I need to replace the middle muffler, it would be just as easy to weld it off. So basically, he said welding it on is MUCH better then just using a clamp. Anyone disagree?
I'd be interested to know why welding it on is a bad idea.
thanks for any feedback.
