Do not discount the pad in the valve cover. Even a good chain will make noise if the pad is bad. When you pull the valve cover to replace the pad, you can inspect the chain for roller wear and stretch. Turn the engine to top dead center and see how the marks line up on the sprockets. You can also see how far the chain tensioner has extended, I think 11 mm is max.
OK, if the chain is stretched and worn, you can roll in a new one with a detachable master link. You could do this yourself, but the labor is probably around 2 hours, and a pro should eliminate the chance of screwing up the cam timing. However, there is a good chance that a bad chain will be accompanied with a worn crank sprocket. This requires removing the timing cover, which is easy if the engine is out of the car, but can be done with the engine in the car. Best left to a pro. I'd guess at 4+ hours of labor. Chain and sprocket should be around $100 with extras for gaskets, oil, etc.
