Agree with Todd on balljoints, they go bad often. Other clunk makers include: loose balljoint bolts, sway bar mounts and end bushings, shock bushings, tie rod ends, loose control arm mounting bolts or a failed control arm bushing.
You can check this all out in a 1/2 hour. Jack up car and remove wheel on offending side with spacers between the upper control arms and the body. I use old spark plugs. This removes tension from ball joints. Get a big channel lock pliers and squeeze the balljoints vertically. Pry side to side with a big screwdriver. If there is play the balljoints are bad. Tie rod ends are also bad if they have any play. If your car has a sway bar, check the end bushings for distortion and mounting bolts. Check shock bushings for disintegration/wear. Tighten all mounting bolts and inspect control arm bushings for distortion and movement when pryed.
