Very well could be heat shield, but be certain the rattle isn't coming from either wheel too. I had similar problem (twice), first time it sounded like a screw being shaken in a glass jar, the second time sounded like i was riding over an already crushed alluminum can... and both times it was only audible at low speeds (and especially over bumps). The problem was the bolts holding the dust shield in place came undone and rattled around between the shield and the rotors... small rocks can also get caught in here and make similar noises.
If you want to check for this first, you can simply jack up the car so the wheel is off the ground, and spin the wheel with your hand as fast as you can and see if you hear the rattle.
If this happens to be your problem, you can do a search for dust, shield, etc and look for posts with my name for help on fixing, or you can just repost with specific questions.
