If the theromstat is more than 2 years old, replace it. It's simple and cheap.

I don't know about the consensus, but for thermostats, I only buy Saab OEM. I've had bad luck with what I've gotten from autoparts stores. For the minimal extra $, it's not worth doing the job twice.

If you're going to an 82C thermostat (a good idea, in my opinion), also go for a 82C radiator fan thermoswitch. The fans come on when the radiator gets hot enough. If the coolant in the radiator is hotter than what's in the engine, it won't help.

If the car is cool, you can replace the thermostat without TOO much leakage. Yes, some will spill out. You only need to drain down a little of the cooling system to replace the thermostat.

I've developed a relatively simple drain system. I hate using the radiator drain, as it usually is stuck, breaks, and drains every which way. I reserve that for flushes. For thermostats, I went to the autoparts store and bought an aftermarket windshield fluid pump for about $12. It comes with about 2 feet of wire. I lengthened the wires and stuck alligator clips on the ends. I stuck a few feet of hose onto the pump. I thread the input hose down into the expansion tank, and the output into a clean container, and clip the leads onto the battery. I pump the fluid level just below the bottom of the tank (I thread the pump hose into the fat hose on the bottom of the tank). This is well below the thermostat. Very clean and neat.
