Oh yeah... sidetracked... the noise...
Um... first I was going to say it didn't sound normal, since our '89 AC clutch sounded pretty much like any other AC car. Maybe your clutch is slipping? Maybe the wiring to the clutch has a bad connection somewhere? That would result in weak electric power which maybe doesn't engage the clutch as strong as it should?
But then I realized that I was just taking wild guesses at the noise, I can't actually hear the noise from here, & somebody else would probably have a better answer anyways.
Fan switch...
It'll just make the fan run all the time, harm the fan motor rather than harming other stuff. I'm sure any of the sponsors would be happy to sell you a new motor after yours burns up...
You have to open up the cooling system to check the thermostat anyway, why not just put the new one in. From your description of the gauge readings (up to 3/4), you've got the OEM setting t-stat & fan switch. I'd put your new t-stat & fan switch in at the same time. You'll spill coolant to put the fan switch in, too. Drain or siphon out some coolant so the level is down below the bottom of the reservoir. If you're too hurried with the thermostat, you might get its gasket twisted up.
