I think if the bearings were actually bad, you'd be able to feel that when you spin the alternator by hand when its off the car. I don't know how they can possibly be good & smooth any more, if they even once seized up at high RPM. Take out the regulator so the brushes aren't rubbing, & spin it. The bearings should be smooth & there shouldn't be any sideways motion.
Between the wobbly mounting and the intermittent ground, you've got enough reason to believe that its OK once those items are fixed. If he didn't know how to hook it up, maybe he wasn't supplying excitation, like the little green wire is supposed to do.
