The mechanic gave bad advice. If the high is too high and the low too low, you definitely have something blocking the expansion valve. It will not 'clear' with runing, but can blow a seal or hose as you have done by excessively high pressure. You probably have to replace the dryer again and the expansion valve and flush the system before you have it sucked down and recharged. If the A/C hose is loose on the manifold (right out of the compressor above the heater hoses) replace this as well or you will have to later when gas leaks out. It depends on what seal blew. A/C can be very expensive to fix! You may have also caused damage to the compressor as well by excessively high pressure. I usually tell people to budget about 1000.00 to fix A/C that does not work on a car just purchased. Sorry for the bad news.
