The engine wiring harness is not the same through the years - it's *mostly* the same '85 through '88, but changed fairly radically for '89. If you have the computer, however, you can fairly easily rewire the engine - just install the new computer, run the new wires. The only major changes in layout from '85 to '88 are the power distribution panel and the connection between the fusebox and the fuel computer (the wires that run across the firewall). You can make it work if you have a good wiring diagram (Bentley manual!) and some working knowledge of the systems involved. If you don't have/don't want air conditioning, it's all that much simpler - most of those connections are for it!
Let me put it this way - I put a 16v motor in my '80 900T, including the LH Jetronic 2.2 from a 1988 SPG. All said and done, it took me less than four hours to do all the wiring necessary. If I can do that, you should be able to swap LH wiring harnesses around to your heart's content.
My personal advice is if you're going to the trouble, consider finding a wiring harness from a '90+ 900T, along with the AIC and AMM. Convert your car to LH 2.4, and enjoy some of its benefits, including self-diagnosis and improved idle control, that the 2.4 system brings.
