Timing chain replacement

I have a 1986 Saab 900S 16 valve. I'm thinking the timing chain just went on it. Is this an engine pull to repair, or can it be done with the engine in the car? Also, what's the possiblity on valve damage? If you know anything, please let me know. I don't have a lot of money, so any cost saving tips will help me big time! We just had a baby last Thursday!
Thanks in advance!
Courtney
