In addition to Jim's suggestions for things to look at, look for small coolant leaks. A couple of likely suspects are:
The weep hole under the water pump seal - you'll likely see a white streak of dried glycol on the exhaust downpipe if this is the case.
The right angle crossover hose at the front of the head, by the distributor - you'll either have a wet battery or you'll see a pin-sized stream of coolant coming out of it somewhere when it's hot.
Also check the hose clamps. Some people have reported the same symptoms and found a loose clamp.
