I Had just gotten off the highway. I started to accelerate, and by the time I hit third gear, I heard a horrible sound, and then the car died. It wouldn't crank, and I thought maybe I lost the timing chain, and it was wrapped around the crank gear. Well, I pulled the valve cover this morning, and the timing chain is still in place. Well, the only other thing I can think of is a thrown rod. I know neither of these problems are usual in a Saab engine, but I figure it's just my luck that I'm one of the few.
My question is this; is it possible to determine a thrown rod without tearing the motor apart? This is doubtful I'm sure, but it's worth a try. If it had an oil pan, I know I could see, but it's got the tranny instead! Oh well, she lasted 218k!
