ANDERS - Question for you

I've read zillions of your posts on this bb, so here's my story.
My '84 900T (8-valve,CIS, owned since new) developed a performance glitch that has so far escaped diagnosis & repair.
The car has 200k miles, G6 apc box, nology plug wires, no internal engine mods, original turbo. Symptoms are a backfire under boost and a lack of power under boost. Driving the car, put foot into throttle, boost gauge swings into low red zone but car backfires and does not pull. It's not the overboost switch (face in the dash). Recently I took the car out on a warm day and noticed it ran very hot on a long uphill with the a/c on. Car has a brand new radiator. I turned a/c off and after the crest the temp went back down. Does this indicate rich or lean, and should next look focus on line pressure (maybe warmup regulator)?
The car was looked at by a very reputable shop that swapped CIS and ignition parts in an attempt to trace the problem, as well as checking whatever there is to test on the CIS. No luck.
The car has never seriously overheated and has had regular oil changes. No leaks or fluids where they should not be. Leakdown test showed lower value on numbers 2 & 3 cyl. (cyl. 1 has helicoil and could not be tested) but all were above 120 as I recall. Cat is not plugged (ran car without it for a test).
Any thoughts on where to focus? I'm pretty sure the prob is not ignition, as both I and the shop tried aftermarket ingitions (Jacobs and MSD) to see if that would help. No effect.
Any thoughts appreciated.
