All it does is let extra air through when the throttle is closed. If the AIC sticks fully closed, then it won't idle well. You can keep the engine from dying with the gas pedal. If it sticks wide open, that's like having a really high idle speed. That won't strand you either. (People might look at you funny at traffic lights...)
I don't see how either way can damage your engine. Sticking wide open might cause you some extra wear on your clutch. Sticking closed makes you use your starter more often if it stalls. If you're coordinated enough to heel&toe the brake & gas then you can keep it from dying when you pull up to a stop sign.
But it's so easy to change, only takes a couple minutes.
