Lazy lifter is a pretty good guess. You can pin down the lifter with a stethoscope and relace it. The fact that it quieted down after spirited driving is good news. The lore is that the 16 valve engine likes to be revved. I would continue to wring it out regularly and i bet you'll free it up. I also would try some marvel mystery oil and see if that helps. I think that the flushes you did were fine and do help to keep the rings and valve lifters free. that's what the marvel does but you leave it in for a whole oil change cycle.
