iirc, from 1988 on, all 900's had water cooled turbos.
When a turbo is water cooled, it just has a second jacket around the bearing cartridge to circulate the water. The oil passages are still there, and more or less the same.
A turbo always needs oil to lubricate the bearings, when they are water cooled, the water cooling is there in addition to the oil cooling, *not* instead of the oil.
Anyways, it is very possible to put a turbo with water cooling on a car that didn't come stock that way, you can either leave the water lines out and plug the holes on the turbo, or retrofit the lines, too.
