OK, could I vent for a moment? Why does Minneapolis have to use copious amounts of salt on their roads? I lived up north (from here) in ‘the sticks’ the majority of my life, and during the winter, side streets are covered with snow and ice all year long. My SPG came with an additional four Nokian snow tires mounted on steel wheels, and they worked well enough for me to tear off my fog lights and right front bumper extension while traversing deep snow. Come on, my Saab was built in the same country that made poor traction, rear-wheel-drive Volvo 240s, and they do not use salt!
I bought my 1987 SPG from Andrews’ of Princeton three years ago (I recommend highly them) with 187,000 miles and have had absolutely no problems until my front brake pads wore through recently (I’m up to 207K now). This seems to be my first car (old 1987 brakes) that doesn’t seem to have brake pad wear indicators. Of course, they started grinding into the rotors while I was in the middle of moving to a new apartment (and yes, I appreciate the fact that I could fit my love seat in the trunk with the hatch closed).
Anyway, so I was trying to use the spare tire jack to put the SPG on jack stands to replace the pads and rotors, and on both sides, as I got close to getting each front tire off the ground, there was a nasty crunching noise, and the car fell a few inches. My fenders do not have any rust, my gas tank lid does not have any rust, but I guess that the underbody of the car is in much worse shape.
Did anybody here watch the History Channel's special on the Autobahn? No salt, no potholes, stay in the right lane, drive fast and safely. Damn, I’m jealous!
I hate to say it, but I’m starting to think about my old 1987 Audi 5000 Turbo Quattro again, just because it was made of galvanized steel…

1987 SPG 207K,
(missing a $300 plastic bumper extension that costs more than a new clutch kit, and a rusting underbody)
