Motor oil or Tranny oil ???

I recently noticed my 900 5 spd leaking oil in the driveway. I wasn't too concerned at first, but its starting to make quite a mess. At first I thought it was motor oil, but it seems too clean to be motor oil. I took a look under the car and noticed where it was dripping from. Now please excuse me, i'm no saab expert, but it was dripping from (or possibly collecting) a round part at the bottom of the transmission where it seems like a bolt should be.
I know this is a very broad description, but its 12:30 AM and I can't go look right now. I will be sure to tomorrow afternoon. Also the more I think about it, the more I believe its transmission oil. Shifting seemed to be tougher between 2-3 and 3-4 (1st to 2nd is always aweful)...
I just would like to know if I can do any damage by running the transmission low of oil? Will i know for a fact when it is low? (Really tough shifting?)
Lastly If it is low, where do I fill it? My bently manual said theres a bolt on the side, do i need to jack the car up?
Thanks to everyone for they're help, sorry to make such a long post, but I love my Saab and don't want to see anything bad happen to it!
