signal stalk replacement help plase!

I just received a new signal stalk for my 92 900S. It seems to be a kit which includes the stalk, a new female half connector, and a wire splice. It seems the purpos is to update the cruise control switch by eliminating a relay. I really don't care if the cruise control works or not.
What seems stupid, is that the instuctions are telling me to dig the old female half connector from under the knee bolster. It would seem easier, if you are retrofitting, to put the correct MALE half connector on the signal stalk, which can be done anywhere, without the space restrictions, and without disturbing te harness under the knee bolster.
My question is weather anyone has opted to do this before, and if anyone can offer advice.
As far as changing the "hard to reach" female half connector, it has me wondering how many Swedish engineers it takes to screw in a light bulb.
