I know nothing about Turbos--having never owned one--except that at startup, according to my owner's manual for my '84 900S, that the engine shouldn't be revved during or after startup (until the engine temp. guage enters the green zone). I think this is so that the oil will warm up enough to properly lubricate the turbocharger bearings (maybe I'm wrong).

[For the same reason, the manual says that the engine (on Turbos) should not be revved just before shutting it off, or oil starvation--due to engine not running and oil not circulating--at the turbo bearings will wear the turbo bearings prematurely. In fact, it says to allow the engine to idle 30 seconds or so before shut-off to let the turbocharger coast down from high speeds if you've been driving aggressively.]

I don't know if you're revving your engine at/after startup, but either way, I wonder if the bearings in the turbo are suffering a bit of oil starvation, just for a second or two, at each startup.

Some on this board have suggested or even insisted that Turbo owners use a synthetic motor oil, such as Mobil One, which should resist the high temperatures in the turbocharger (which leads to "coking" of regular "dino" or petroleum oil; a.k.a. oil breakdown).

Might want to try synthetic oil, then. It's worth a shot.

If nothing else, have someone else start the car while you stand outside, with the hood up, and try to pinpoint the noise.
