It sometimes is helpful to define your goals clearly before choosing among alternate paths.

If your goal is inexpensive, reliable, fun transportation, this does not mandate disproportionate expense. You may have to rebuild someday, but then again, perhaps not, or perhaps not for quite a while.

If you absolutely, positively want reliability, either rebuild now or have the motor VERY thoroughly gone through by a Saab mechanic before driving away with a used motor.

If it is likely that you will modify things in quest of additional performance, recognize at the outset that the performance modification bug is addictive, and your initial "target" may soon lead to more and more upgrades. If you might fall within this group (and Welcome! if you do), consider having the motor rebuilt before you begin.

If you're already a performance junkie and you plan to highly modify the motor, not only should you rebuild now, but you should consider doing some research on the performance bbs before you begin. For example, some people mix and match different heads, intakes and exhausts from other years to upgrade the engine's breathing. There are lots of modification steps that seem best done with a rebuild when the motor's out of the car and you're not desperate to get it up and running asap.
