Pinion bearings conclusive test for failure?

Hello all,
My new to me 90T finally got an interstate roadtest tonite. I bought it with a failed clutch (only needed to bleed the clutch hydraulic system).
So during the roadtrip I hear the dread WHINE, which most definitely is not engine speed, as you can hear the frequency increase from 4th to 5th. Under load it is barely audible, then once backing off the throttle it nearly disappears. Might even be just audible in 3rd, but not as clearly.
Of course, every thing downstream of the gear changes are also increasing in speed. CV's , wheel bearings, innerdrivers, and of course ring & pinion system.
FWIW, car has 130K on odometer (functional & counting). Oil in trans is clear and smells like gear lube, not motor oil.
TIA to you tranny & drivetrain experts.
