Probably not the knock sensor. Check the simple things first - spark plugs, plug wires, cap & rotor.
One very important piece to look at is the black Hall Effect connector on the side of the distributor. The connectors get brittle and move around with acceleration and can cause jerking, if not total engie stopping.
Also, check the hose clamps on the rubber boots on the turbo induction ducts. They can loosen and either let unmetered air in or let metered air out as boost rises - same type of symptom. The boots can also develop splits and delaminations that can let pressurized air out.
Vacuum hoses and rubber bushings that hold vacuum nipples into the intake manifold and valve cover can also leak boost and cause similar symptoms.
There are a lot of possibilities, but those are the ones that come to mind first.
