I had a similar problem. I used to have to lift up the pin, or do other acrobatics to get the lever into 5th. Eventually, I found the problem.
The cause was a worn/torn/disolved shift linkage bushing. It's in the forward part of the shift-lever box and guides the linkage. The grease in the lever-box degrades the rubber bushing over time and it won't hold the linkage in place the way it should. If you examine the operation of the ring and ball in the lever box you'll see that side to side movement of the shift-lever SHOULD twist the linkage. If the bushing is rotted the same side to side movement will only move the linkage side to side, not twisting it like it should. Does that make an accurate picture for ya? Hope this helps.

Replacement is a pain in the arse but not impossible. I can give you the low down if this turns out to be your problem.
