That depends on your tastes as regards volume. A single 10" (most manufacturers) will give you a nice even response at moderate volume levels. But if you want a big sound then a big speaker with an adequate amp is required. I tried two polk 10" powered by a 2 channel 300 watt amp, but wasn't satisfied. I replaced the two with one 12" Sony Xtreme sub powered by a mono signal from the bridged 300 watt amp. The difference was dramatic, yet I could still use more power for this speaker rated at 900 max watts. That would mean a cleaner sound at the highest volume levels. Before I buy a new amp though, I'll first build a box around the sub. Since all the speakers (the two 10" polks now serve as standard left and right channel woofers, with the 12" mounted in the middle) are mounted on the rear deck, I did have to reinforce the flimsy deck with a layer of rigid press board, plus fiberglass on the supporting edges. Even with all that, I'm still interested in finding out just how happy I'd be with a larger sub speaker, say at least a 15" speaker, which would have to go in the trunk.
