My guess is that most DIY'ers (even very experienced ones) don't mess with the airbag due to the serious injuries that can result from accidental deployment.
First, how do you know that the SRS control unit is faulty ? Most of the airbag problems in Saabs result from the ring in the steering wheel column going bad. Replacing that control unit appears to be a rather large undertaking too, because you basically have to remove the whole dashboard to get to it.
Second, even if you do replace the control unit (assuming it's bad), I would bet that the SRS light would flash afterwards, and there's no DIY way of shutting that off (except removing the bulb in the dash).
I'm not suggesting you give the dealership 900 bucks of your hard earned money, but I would strongly advise you to take it to a Saab indie who would probably charge you a lot less. Just my $0.02 though. Good luck with it.
