The round metal disks cover the fuel pump (biger LH one) & fuel gauge sender (smaller, RH one). That's on a hatchback, but I suppose the convertible is about the same for this.
Pop both of those covers off, then you'll be looking at the actual top of the gas tank. Look around for evidence of leaking. Maybe the gasket at one of these components? Fuel lines coming from the fuel pump?
Even if the tank itself is cracked, this is probably where the smell gets thru to the trunk.
