I simply use a garden hose in very concentrated areas (i.e. no wires) just on the block and head with engine cold. I use Simple Green and a brush; sometimes a toothbrush in those hard-to-reach areas. I use the same on a rag to clean the wires and harnesses. Get as much of the major grime as you can this time. Once clean, wash it twice a year and to maintain it. I also clean the inner fender wells with a wax and grease remover such as Dupont 3919S from an auto paint suppplier. I even wax those areas that I can get to. Its overkill, but I continue to get comments that the engine compartment looks like its still new. I once had a dealer mechanic comment "when and why did you change the head?" when my Volvo was a few years old. It was just clean, that's all. The 900 gets the same treatment.
