Difficult, but doable. Once the 6(?) screws are removed around the top lip of the air filter "can", the whole air flow sensor/fuel distributor can be lifted up enough to pull the old filter out and install a new one. The hosing and tubes connected to that whole system do flex enough so that removing them isn't necessary. Be sure to fix the plastic disc base onto the bottom of the new filter before slipping it back in the can. That will guide the filter where it should go so the top half is centered and seals properly to the air flow sensor unit. It's really kinda simple, just clumsy. One additional complication: this may not apply to your 84, but on my 82 unit I have a plastic fitting that attaches to the air flow sensor unit and runs down into the center of the filter. It connects to the large hose running to the valve cover and serves to vent crankcase gases as well as drain blowby oils. That fitting has to be moved around so the filter can be pulled and reinstalled. Because of that hose and fitting connection, I always find a puddle of oil in the base of the filter whenever I've replaced the filter. That's normal.
