If you have any holes or cracks in the heat shield it is STRONGLY recommended you replace it as the wiring harness to your ignition switch will melt from the heat!
On an unrelated topic, there's a nice '84 S in my favorite junkyard that was driven by an organ donor (no seat belt, 25 mile per hour impact on the right front, redecorated windshield, and electrical fire beginning at the fuse panel.)
As far as fire resistance goes, the car did great. The minimal fire, even though it must've seen some fuel from the fuel lines and filter in that vicinity, did not propogate into the passenger compartment at a lethal rate like almost every other car on the planet. As our '85 sales brochure states, the front of the headliner and sun visors and dash appear to have self-extinguished within 30 seconds tops. The unfortunate driver of this vehicle was able to open the driver's door and exit the car, and the dash did not catch fire despite being heavily singed and the instrument cluster melting from the heat.
I'm impressed. I compared it to the Oldsmobile on the other side of the lot, where all that was left was the steering wheel decorations and seat springs, plus whatever else was metal at one time.
Just another 'toast' to Saab's safety record, which has saved my sorry hide twice now.
