Did you short out the thermo switch (upper LH radiator) when the ignition is turned on?
There's a relay screwed onto the inner fender wall, sort of opposite the windshield washer bottle. It turns off the fan after a couple minutes, even if the thermo switch is stuck on. Its plug can get corroded, or the relay can screw up, which prevents the fan(s) from running at all.
Unplug this, clean & grease the plug. You can jumper it instead, but I forget which wires you jumper. Lots of people pitch this relay & jumper the plug as a permanent fix. I think TownsendImports.com says which wires to jumper together.
Temperature gauge is completely separate from the fan circuit. Erratic gauge sometimes can be fixed by tightening or cleaning the small nuts on the back of the gauge. Reach them thru the speaker hole. If you remove the wire from the sensor (at thermostat) & ground it, the gauge should peg hot.
Let us know how it goes.
