1990 SPG - just purchased a few days ago. Prior to buying I had a Saab mechanic who I trust inspect it for problems/concerns. Area below steering rack was wet (about 2' X 2' area) with fluid, so something is leaking (I wish it was a loose fitting, and have changed 2 racks before in previous 900T's). Mechanic wasn't certain whether it was Rack, Pump, or Both?
Here's where I need guidance. The steering works 100% fine (it's my 7th 900T), with none of the symptoms I have seen before (chatter, fast ratio, hard). I do not have a lift, but do have ramps, jack, stands, tools, etc. Any suggestions on rational ways to go about isolating the leak, so I can repair/replace the RIGHT thing?
The mechanic said the power steering fluid softens the undercoat (?), so I kind of wonder how to clean the mess without wiping the undercoat off the underpinnings.
Other than this, SPG is in nice cond (Cal. car, no rust or corrosion), shined up very nicely (red), nice interior, and drives perfectly.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! THANKS.
