After almost 3 years of searching for the perfect donor car, I found a 1983 900 non-turbo Coupe with a rebuilt (50,000 Kms on the rebuild) 5-speed tranny for $500 Cdn. Bought new clutch parts, paid my mechanic $1,350 for labour and my 87 Turbo convertible AT became a 5-speed. I did it all for about $2,200 Cdn but it took a long time and some luck. The car is a rocket now since the non-turbo 5-speed is geared for a normally aspirated engine.
You might want to spread the word to various Saab shops around town. There seems to be many occasions where people bring in their cars, hear what the repair will be and tell the mechanic to keep it.
You never know!
