1979-1993 & 94 Conv [Subscribe to Daily Digest] |
From POV of 26yo only-owned-2-used-C900-n/a-variants-my-whole-short-life and questioned whether new-Saab was for me. Potential buyer 12-18mo. If don't read below, point is this: This was the FIRST TIME w post-C900 Saab cars or competitors I've driven where I got out of my old C900 and into the 'new' car and didnt' have convulsions (or re: the 9-5 Aero just felt lost in a nice big car). Then, most importantly, got *back* in my car and longed to get back in the new one! That has NEVER happened before (except for the Audi TT coupe, but that's a kiwis to apples comparison). For all their radical differences, I felt like my old car had met it's long lost younger brother.
Fresh off the truck from last night, none of the computer stuff even programed yet (and soon didn't care). It was raining. Had car adjusted in a snap, immediately felt at home. The meat: The car had the old solid yet nimble feet, wonderful 5-speed and pedal feel (and I mean truly excellent IMO), and positively *flew* w an assuredness I haven't experienced before. The low end was so right-there, the on-ramps so effortless, overtaking so easy, the supposed 175 Swedish horses must be on a crack high. I chatted w the young Irish kid sales guy about the car while I drove all care-free, the car instantly familiar to me (normally I'm on pins and needles in any strange-to-me car (incl the old 9-3) radio off, kinda nervous). Compared to other cars I drove in late summer: the A4 1.8 felt meek, the turbo poorly integrated, and the (old) 9-3SE, well, I'll just bite my tongue (it didn't fare well).
On the other boards people are gnashing teeth over performance (what?), plastic parts, whatever. They're missing the point. This is the 318 of BMW's, so to speak, not the M3. This is a *darn nice* little car, and a heck of a starting point for the other trims/variants.
Am keeping my '85 n/a for sentimental reasons, and still want to own/rebuild an SPG, but am relieved my next car will in fact be a Saab. Can't wait to sample the upcoming trim levels and variants. My '85 has to retire someday....
