yes, I think we have axial play in the pinion shaft.
Drained her (only normal metal "fuzz" on the magnet), pulled the diff. cover, and no large garbage found within. Actually the oil came out fairly brown, and smells like motor oil, not gear oil. With car on ramps I lifted one axle and turned the wheel by hand, putting 2 fingers on the end of the pinion. When you change direction, I can feel the pinion moving, maybe .010-.020, hard to tell for sure, but "with eyes closed" I can feel the pinion moving slightly. Not what I wanted to find ....
OK, so I am presuming to avoid imminent trans death, its time for bearings.
Is the removal procedure in Bently accurate? Any shortcuts? I have priced the bearings and crush sleeve (cheap), but anything else to do while I am in there? You mentioned the 1-2 shiftfork, would that be worthwhile? This car only has 117K on it, and I hope to run it to the ground.
I guess I will rent a cherry picker and yank it out the top. Do I need some sort of spreader to avoid crushing topside stuff? Can the trans. work be done with engine attached, or must they be separated?
Any other recs. appreciated. I would plan on motor mount checks, alt. bushings, maybe the hidden hoses, seals as required.
thanks,
DET
