Universal problem. First the bulbs twist out counterclockwise from the bulbs perspective(towards interior), clockwise from driver perspective.
The cause of intermittent lighting is often due to dimples being melted in the plastic gauge cluster housing from using the common 5 watt #194 bulbs. You're on the right track with 3 watters. If the dimples are not too deep you can probably solve the intermittent problem by bending up the contacts that hit the plastic printed film so they will spring into the film, clean the contacts and the film with some WD40 or contact cleaner. If the dimples are too deep, you can fill them in with jb weld behind the film. i had to use a toothpick applicator and a mirror to see what was going on, still tricky to work backwards with the mirror.
The green light comes from a reflector inside the socket hole. You can clean the dust/dirt off it by poking a Q-tip soaked in rubbing alcohol into the socket hole and rubbing it on the surface of the reflector. This will help, but still not great. Some people on the bb have rewired to convert to LED bulbs with much better results.
