Notchy shifter...just live with it???

The shifter on my 86 SPG is very reluctant to go into first sometimes. I realize that this is a common problem, and not exclusive to SAABs. Is this a sign that it is out of alignment? Worn coupler? Tranny shifts fine in other gears and does not grind at all. Rowing the gears helps sometimes, but not always.
It seems to go about 1/2 way from neutral to first without much effort, but the remainder of the shifter travel to get it into gear is a PITA! Feels like I'm gonna break the shifter off sometimes!!
Thanks
Bill
