I have not yet seen a DIY manual that covers automatic trans. rebuilding. Even if I had, it is certainly way beyond the scope of my capabilities, and I'll go out on a limb here and say the same for a good percentage of the Saabnet community.

Those things are pretty complicated, and I really can't envision the average weekend mechanic attempting to rebuild an automatic and winding up with anything more than a pile of parts on the bench afterwards. Having said that, you'll probably tell me that you're a mechanical engineer or have rebuilt automatics before.

Assuming that you know how to do this, you should in fact be able to buy a rebuild kit and do the job yourself. With one possible exception, I am fairly certain that the automatics have certain procedures that require special tools that are only available from Saab. You would need to investigate that first. (hint: let a shop do it, and get a warranty)

And finally, here's my real advice: If you have the patience and time to remove the transmission, I would suggest converting your car to a 5 spd. which has been done many times, and there is a procedure listed on this board for doing this. IMHO, the automatics are a pain in the b*tt.
