odometer started working again -- only when cold!

Ok, so I thought this was a bit bizzare. My odometer hasn't really worked all summer, and I just haven't bothered to fix it. The past week or so has been pretty cold down here in Virginia (low 40's in the am, first "frost" was today). In the mornings, when the car is cold, the odometer works! However, when I drive home at night, and the ambient temp has gone up a bit, it doesn't work.
When I'm driving to work, the car does reach full operating temp, probably for 10 minutes or so. It works all the way to the office, even once it's hot. I have not, however, driven the car for more than ~25 minutes in the morning, so it's possible that eventually it would cease functioning once whatever it is gets warm enough.
Any thoughts? I'd love to get it working reliably without replacing it, but have no idea why the temp would matter so much.
Thanks,
-Dan
