Auxillary Air Valve Cleaning ??

My 1988 8 valve 900 has an old air valve that usually acts up every 4 months or so. At first I could take it off (5 minute job) and spray cleaner or silicon fluid on both sides of the valve and then lubricate with WD-40, let it drip dry and test it in the freezer and perhaps move the valve back and forth with a thin rod. It is turning cool in the mornings and the valve is not opening far enough so the idle is dropping too low and it wants to stall until it has been run for 10 minutes and then it runs perfect. My cleaning jobs dont last as long as they used to. DO ANY OF YOU HAVE A BETTER METHOD OF CLEANING THEM ? I may have to buy a new one if they are still available but in past years I found a new one can act up in a year or two. Just not a good design. Your thoughts?
