I get an intermittent squeal at start up (as well as another time, read on) so i marked the harmonic balancer with white out, checked a few weeks later, and all seems fine there. I now suspect the belts, and now that i think of it, i believe the squeal began after having a mechanic replace all the belts in the car. I also no longer suspect my HB because the other day while walking in the street i saw a woman start her jeep and it howled like mad for a few seconds, and my squeal is not nearly as bad as hers was (and thanks to this board i knew right away her HB was going bad)
The squelch seems to be concurrent with a drop in RPM below idle. For instance, when i'm driving slow in a turn and depress the clutch late (so that the car being in gear has helped me slow down), i may get the squeal as the RPMs drop below the 900 mark (due to my taking the car out of gear) but then goes away as soon as the tachometer rebounds back. Since the problem is intermittent and i only realize it after the fact, i may have this reversed, and the squeal may come when i'm putting the car back in gear, but i think you get the general idea.
So.... what actually happens with belts to make them change speed? It seems to me (novice) that the squeal occurs as the belts experience some sort of change in speed, due to the change in idle. However, i have no idea if the belts speed up or slow down as the idle changes, or if the belts actually are supposed to move at a constant speed throughout. Maybe the belts get extra tension on them when pulling away from an almost starting position and squeal at that point? Not really sure how i can go about testing them without removing each one individually and driving the car for a brief distance, hoping i get the squeal.
The other possibility is A/C idler pulley, but i don't know how to tell the difference if the problem is this or the bels. Where is the best/easiest place to start to diagnose at this point?
Any comments or suggestions, or statements that more info is needed, are appreciated. Thanks in advance.
