Is my hub shot? (long) Posted by Ken [Email] (#2113) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ken) on Sun, 20 Oct 2002 17:16:29 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
A little background... I replaced inner drivers/tripod bearings on my 88' 900 8-valve about 6 months ago. A couple weeks ago, I had a flat on the highway that ruined the tire. Since I needed them anyways, I bought a new set of Dunlop sport A2s. The car has been handling very squirrely ever since. Took it to the dealer to have a wheel alignment done and they told me my upper control arm bushings on the driver side were bad. I replaced them a couple days ago, but hasn't really helped any. In fact, it got worse! And I started hearing a "rubbing" vibration (wheel bearing) while driving that got less when turning. I finally jacked up the car and checked the drivers side wheel. To my horror, the hub nut was about 3 - 4 turns loose! It's no wonder the handling was so bad. I tightened it back up, but I fear the damage has been done.
My question? How can I tell just how much damage has been done? I'm certain that the bearing is shot since I hear a scraping sound when turning the tire. What else could I have screwed up? Is it possible to ruin the hub? Thanks for taking the time to read my sad tale and TIA for helping me out.
