I know the sound. Frequently it is not the alternator, but the tensioning pulley. If your belt is loose, tighten it, but unfortunately that is not the most common problem. Usually it is the pulley bearings going bad. Makes a very distinctive SAAB specific noise, especially on reving the engine and accelerating. I had this problem, and it is annoying but not serious if treated early. If that is the case, you need a new tensioning pulley. Annoying but not too difficult to replace. If it is indeed the alternator that is screaming, you are pooched and you need to replace it imediately as an alternator with bad bearings will fail and you will be stranded. Usually that is not the problem though, it is the tensioning pulley. They ain't cheap, but they aren't that expensive either, ($40?). Then you need to struggly with a box wrench (or even better a ratchetting box wrench) to pul the bolt and remove the pulley. To re-install, don't forget to release belt tension before re-installing, or you will never get it on.

How do you check? Get a mechanics stethascope OR roll up a long peice of paper and place it to your ear. direct it at the pulley and rev the engine. Then direct it at the alternator and rev the engine. By doing this you are listenning more to one versus the other and the louder sound will be your guide as it will narrow down and identify the problem. USE A LONG 14" or even better a long newspaper that is rolled up with a 1 inch hole down the center to keep you away from moving parts! Whichever is louder is the culprit.
