Are you manual or automatic transmission?
If manual, could be the clutch needs replacing. A worn clutch is a loose clutch and will not fully engage, so it will spin until static friction eventually wins out over dynamic friction. If the problem is not as bad while accelerating very slowly but you break free and rev up when you jam the gas pedal (like when jumping onto the on ramp at the highway), that is posibly the problem. It would not rev if it was fully engaged, as the wheels would retard it from accelerating by feeding back into the clutch which in turn would be firmly pressed against the flywheel which would be holding back the engine from reving. Might need to pull out the wallet. My advice is that you might want to change/rebuild the starter and the alternator and water pump at the same time, as when they pull the engine, (as they might do), you can easily reach these things, but you can't when they are installed. Also a good time to change the rack and pinion.
If automatic, could need fluid or could be worn out and needing replacement, so pull out your wallet. My advice is that you might want to change/rebuild the starter and the alternator and water pump at the same time, as when they pull the engine, (as they will have to do), you can easily reach these things, but you can't when they are installed. Also a good time to change the rack and pinion.
Hope this helps.
Anyone else with any ideas?
