Auto Trans band adjustment. Posted by Rob [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Should the bands on an auto trans be adjusted as preventive maintenance or only when a problem occurs. I have a 92 Conv with 80k mile that I have owned since 66k. I change the fluid at every oil change (~ 4 qts of type F) and the trans shifts great with the exception of a hard shift from 1st to 2nd (the opposite of a slip) after the car has not been driven for a couple of hours. After the first shift cycle it works fantastic. I can’t find anything in the Bentley manual about adjusting the bands but I read somewhere that you drop the pan and using a 7.87mm thick spacer, stick the spacer in between bolt/band and tighten the bolt to 0.9 foot lbs.
My questions are:
1) Do I have a problem with this hard shift? It doesn’t happen every time but I think it has been since I have owned the car.
2) Is the band adj procedure correct?
3) What does the spacer look like I can I make one or can I buy one?
Thanks,
Rob
