The 30 year old VW bug Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: considering turning Saab into a working museum piece?, Walt P., Wed, 23 Oct 2002 21:52:29 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
There is no reason you can't keep the car forever, as long as you're willing to keep fixing things. So in general, don't make this your main car. Two reasons - one, it'll build up the miles, and two, you're going to need to have the car down for repairs on occasion.
My old boss had a VW bug that he was quite proud of - it was a '63, and he had bought it new. This was in the mind 1990's. He was very proud that the car was over 30 years old and he drove it regularly.
Of course, he had rebuilt the engine no less than 5 times. And it wasn't the original - that had become unrebuildable a long time ago. He could pull an engine in a short afternoon.
Oh, yes, there were a few other things different. Basically, the only things 'original' on the car was the steering wheel, rear seat cushion, and VIN plate. He had even swapped chassis at one time.
But it was original!
Yes, you can do it. Just be aware that this is a hobby, and as such, will consume more money than it produces savings. You will be spending money for repairs that otherwise you wouldn't have spent if you had a different car. This is true because at some point or other, you'll have to replace just about anything that can wear or rust out.
But if you've got the proper mindset and resources, go for it! We need those originals driving around!
